Hunger Issues in NC                                                                 

  • According to Feeding America the North Carolina food insecurity rate is 18.6% and the child food insecurity rate is 26.7%. The national rate is 15.9% and the national rate for child food insecurity is 21.6%. 

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America  North Carolina and Louisiana lead the nation with the highest percentage of childern under 5 years old who are food insecure on a regular basis. 

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America between 2010 and 2013 North Carolina ranked among the top 5 states with the highest percentage of citizens experiencing food shortages.

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America NC has several cities with some the highest levels of food insecurity in the nation: Asheville, Greensboro, HighPoint and Winston-Salem.

  •  According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America approximately 170,200 different people in NC receive emergency food assistance in any given week. This is equivalent to the entire current undergraduate enrollment of all 16 colleges and universities that make up the overall University of North Carolina system.

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America North Carolina ranks in the ten worst states in the percentage of children under 18 who are lacking food on a regular basis.

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America 80% of NC households with children and receiving food assistance don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America 28% of food pantries in NC have had to turn people away for lack of food.

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America 42% of families served by food banks have had to choose between buying food and heating their homes.

  • According to the North Carolina Association of Food Banks and Feeding America 35% of families served by food banks have been forced to choose between paying for food or for their rent/mortgage.
